Kevin G. Chapman We had a neighbor in the house behind ours who was a hoarder. There were dozens of trash cans filled with black garbage bags, and dozens of loose black garbage bags piled up behind the house. We always joked that if we ever needed to dispose of a body, we could cut it up, put the parts in a black garbage bag, and mix it in with all those garbage bags. If anyone ever discovered the grisly contents of our bags, who do you think the police would suspect as the killer? Would make a good plot!
Kevin G. Chapman When Maria emerged from the water, droplets glistening as they trickled down her one-piece bathing suit, she smiled at the lifeguard, who was admiring her, then lifted a hand to her forehead to shade her eyes as she squinted and looked for Brody. The boy had been hard at work on a sand castle next to the lifeguard stand, but now his blue and yellow sand bucket lay askew in a puddle of sea water -- and Brody was gone.
Kevin G. Chapman Thanks for asking, Bobbi. Mike Stoneman #2, titled "Deadly Enterprise," is in production and I'm hoping to have it available by the fall. My cover designer is working on the image, which I'll share as soon as it's done. I'll have pre-sale available at some point, but that date is TBD. Cheers!
Kevin G. Chapman Great question. My favorite fictional world is middle Earth, but with regrets to J.R.R., it would not be much fun to visit unless you were an honored guest of royalty. I would rather visit the future Earth described in Robert Heinlein's classic "Stranger in a Strange Land." As a lawyer, I like this world, where lawyers are esteemed and where the rule of law is respected. I also love the idea of the philosophy of the Martian/Earthling Valentine, including the optional use of clothing. That would be an interesting vacation spot!
Kevin G. Chapman Dagny Taggart and Hank Reardon (Atlas Shrugged). The relationship here is very complicated and almost a romance of enemies. They share the same core beliefs, but cannot admit that to each other. In the end, they come together but it's a battle to the finish.
Kevin G. Chapman My most recent novel is very loosly based on personal experiences at college. I wanted to write a story with characters who were students around my era at Columbia, and the story developed from there. The politics of the story are pretty simple, but the different characters and sub-plots took a long time to develop -- but always back to the central theme. I wanted to have inter-weaving stories that all would have a common element and that worked out prety well.
Kevin G. Chapman Honestly, most of my inspirations for stories come in my dreams. I'm not sure how or why, but I often wake up from interesting dreams and write down the major plot points of the story I was just dreaming. I keep a pad of paper and a pen next to the bed so that I can capture the ideas while they are fresh. Every once in a while I'll have a waking good idea, but most of my best ideas happen in my sleep.
Kevin G. Chapman I just finished my second full-length fiction novel. I'm currently about half-way through a screenplay about a major league ballplayer and a model who help each other professionally and end up falling in love and foiling a fraud scheme. I'm also sketching out a very large story arc for a space opera and I'm mostly finished with the backstory work on a dystopian future fiction involving class struggles and politics.
Kevin G. Chapman Aspiring writers should be patient. Find a day job where you can write professionally to polish your technique and ability so that you can apply that in your publishable writing. It's a long process, so don't expect instant results.
Kevin G. Chapman The best thing about being a writer is the opportunity to express myself. My characters and stories are all little bits of my personality and philosophy, so through the writing I can get that out there in the world, but with a different voice.
Kevin G. Chapman Fortunately for me, writing is my hobby and not my occupation, so if I'm not feeling the muse, I just do homework or turn attention to other activities. I"m also working on 3-4 different writing projects at once, so if I have no particular inspiration for one, I can move to a different suject.
