I get asked this question all of the time. And I wish I had the definitive answer. As yet, I really don't know. I think the seed was planted long before I can remember. I started writing when it became time to harvest.

I had no choice. There was just too much rattling inside my head about the parallels between stories and brands. I also became frustrated with the fact that story had become marketing's new hammer, and everything was a nail. Story, for many, is a misunderstood concept. Seeing it used the wrong way was like watching someone try to win the 100-yard dash wearing hip waders.

Don't be your own time cop. Give yourself as much time as you need to wash, rinse and do it all over again - as many times as required to become 100% satisfied with your writing. I find that personal deadlines can kill artistry. The best way to say something doesn't always come on the day you need it to. Sometimes you just have to wait.

I was always cynical about people who claim that the best thing about what they do is finding that it makes a difference in someone's life.
But then I started receiving letters and emails thanking me for making a difference. Since then, my cynicism has gone into hiding. Actually, I was embarrassed to find just how satisfying it is to learn that that someone has benefited from what's inside my head. It's a wonderful connection kind of thing that I haven't been able to satisfactorily describe. But I'm working on it.
