One of my favorite books is "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr (who I had the good fortune of running into once and he signed my copy of his book!). I have often wondered why this historical novel was never picked up by the film business, it would make a wonderful movie.
It is set in the late 19th Century, New York City, when Theodore Roosevelt was Police Commissioner. Being a native New Yorker myself, I found it fascinating to picture in my mind the city with dirt roads, horse drawn carriages and gas lights. So, that would be the "book world" I would like to visit.
This book is a murder mystery and the aim of the main characters is to get to the bottom of a crime spree. Mr. Carr also includes a strong (for the time period) female character, and I should like to either be that particular character or one much like her, helping to decipher clues and solve the mystery.
It is a compelling, atmospheric book that recreates a rich era in a cosmopolitan town that I think would be incredible to experience.

If I could, but I doubt that it is possible, I would write the story of my parents, who remain a mystery to this day. My birth came late in their story and twelve years later, they divorced. In those days, divorce and personal relationships were not the subject of conversation, especially around children. So, I find that I never truly knew or understood who my father was or what motivated him. My mother, ever silent, remained an enigma. It would be, in my eyes, an interesting and bittersweet story to tell.

My favorite couple is Heathcliff and Catherine, of "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte. Why? I was a teenager when I read it and it was the first book that ever made me cry. The imagery was so evocative, that on gloomy days I would imagine that I was on the "Heights." Star crossed, romantic....the story sticks with me still.
