I have often wondered why this historical novel was never picked up by the film business, it would make a wonderful movie.
It is set in the late 19th Century, New York City, when Theodore Roosevelt was Police Commissioner. Being a native New Yorker myself, I found it fascinating to picture in my mind the city with dirt roads, horse drawn carriages and gas lights. So, that would be the "book world" I would like to visit.
This book is a murder mystery and the aim of the main characters is to get to the bottom of a crime spree. Mr. Carr also includes a strong (for the time period) female character, and I should like to either be that particular character or one much like her, helping to decipher clues and solve the mystery.
It is a compelling, atmospheric book that recreates a rich era in a cosmopolitan town that I think would be incredible to experience.(less)

Are the stars out tonight?

At our former address, we used to love sitting out on the balcony even after it got dark.  The expanse of sky before us, the town to the left.  The parking lot, especially during the summer, was obscured by trees and greenery.

That all changed when the parking lot was expanded to three times its original size.  Trees were felled, bushes removed, earth turned over...and LOTS more streetlights insta
