The upcoming one came from a dream. It was a great dream, and in fact, the first section of the first chapter is almost entirely from my voice-recorded notes I took when I woke up from the dream.
The follow-up came from a character that appears in the previous story, he appeared to me fully formed with history behind him. I knew right away that I needed to tell his story as well.

I'm always writing to a certain degree. I see people and tell stories about what I perceive from their dress, demeanor, their speech. I like pondering the reasoning behind behaviors and actions, I always have. People are interesting to me and I get the best stories from working out why and the reasoning behind it.

I just finished up an entirely different kind of romance than what I normally write. It's a contemporary regency romance with comedy and chemistry. A fun little romp that came from a combination of Tom Burke from BBC's Musketeers, Tom Mison from Sleepy Hollow, and Augustana's Boston, I'm editing the completed rough draft now.

Keep reading and keep writing. You get better at everything through practice. Listen to conversations around you in crowded places, people watch and construct narratives around those you see. Look for the 'why' in everything.

I can write regardless of attire, physical health, state of my hair. It's something I can do completely independent of the world I inhabit currently and I value my space with my imaginary friends.

I read a lot, and I try to write a few sentences daily. I get hung up, sometimes, and while I read and listen to music, I meditate on the next major plot point I need to reach. I turn it over in my head as to why the characters need this to happen, who it benefits, what consequences does it engender, and how do I see the scene opening. Usually, by answering one or all of those question am I able to pull myself out of a blocked frame of mind.
Sometimes, I look at the scene I'm in and ponder how it would go from another character's point of view. That provides me with dialogue and occasionally entirely new avenues of exploration that also separate me from the blocked space in my head.
