Chuck De Los Santos As I stared at the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the best one ever made in the history of the world, my mouth began to salivate. I opened the fridge, noticed the gallon of milk only had two tablespoons left, and threw the sandwich away.
Chuck De Los Santos Because my book is a memoir, it was drawn from my memories, so I don't think I had writer's block like someone might have had with a fiction book. Sometimes, I wasn't sure how to phrase something and would get stuck on a word or sentence, switching back and forth. An hour or two later, with no progress, I would pause that section and work on another memory.
I would be doing a normal activity, walking/eating/playing when an idea of how to navigate the book would pop into my head. I loved those moments! Out of nowhere, you knew how to fit the pieces together. Those were cool feelings!
Chuck De Los Santos When I doubted myself, wondering why I would share details about my past, I thought of my daughter and how this book might provide a brighter future for her, which motivated me.
During the writing process, I would get depressed recalling my memories and how I felt, so I would take walks and listen to music. One song in particular, "I Won't Run" by The Struts, was instrumental in helping me navigate those thoughts and feelings. It invigorated me to keep writing, boosting me out of a depressed state of mind. It was very powerful for me and I would play that song on repeat on some of my walks.
