Cege Smith I spent about two months binging on the TV show 'Fringe' on Netflix. I thought it would be really neat to write a story that marries supernatural and science elements- it's something that I haven't tried to do before as my stories to date have focused primarily on creatures (vampires, zombies, witches, etc.). I had a thriller suspense serial concept that I tried out in mid-2013 that just never took off so I pulled those down. With the new idea in mind, I rebooted that serial under the 'Mortality' title and have added some subtle paranormal elements that are really going to manifest themselves in a big way in the later installments.
Cege Smith I'm inspired to write all the time. The difficult part is choosing which idea to focus on. I keep a summary list of all of the different ideas that have skipped through my head, and that gives me a nice reference point if I'm having a hard time deciding what to write next.
Cege Smith I'm working on several projects right now: the Mortality serials, a couple of shorts for Halloween, and then gearing up to start the Immortal End series (which follows Ageless). I have a lot of different irons in the fire, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
Cege Smith Send your internal editor packing, or else you'll never get anything written. Writing the first draft is actually my favorite part of the whole process because I just let my characters do whatever they want to do and watch the story unfold in front of me with no filters or judgment. If I allowed myself to judge my work before I got that first draft down on paper, I'd probably have never completed a story.
Write, write, and write some more until you can type "THE END". Then you can go back later and do the hard work of editing it for publication.
Cege Smith This is one of the best jobs ever. I think what I've enjoyed the most is meeting all of the characters in my stories and giving them a voice. I have a special place in my heart for every one of them.
Cege Smith I don't really believe in writer's block. I do however believe that writers will find the most diabolical and creative ways to procrastinate actually sitting down to write. I'm guilty of that myself. In the end, the writing doesn't get done unless you sit down and do it, and that's a lot easier to do when I set a regular schedule and plot out a few sentences on what I'm going to write next. Makes it feel easier.
