Gary C. King Back in the day, in 1979, when I first began writing professionally, a lot of legwork went into the research and I naturally wore out a lot of shoe leather having to visit police departments and sheriff's departments throughout the Pacific Northwest. Each and every time I wanted to write a 5,000 word story for the detective magazines, which only paid $250, I had to make a trip to the investigating department of the case(s) I was interested in. Multiply this effort by 4-6 times per month, and you can see that a lot of work and time went into the research. Nowadays, with the computer, research is a bit easier, but for book-length projects a lot of legwork still goes into it. Also, after years of building a reputation of trust with various law enforcement agencies, much can be accomplished by telephone and email.
Gary C. King For me, the best thing about being a writer is being able to be my own boss. Since I've gone indie after 30+ years of traditional publishing, this has only increased and has become more positive. Love of the written word creates an inner satisfaction from being a writer as well.
Gary C. King I am currently working on three projects two of which involve serial killers. I hope to finish them unless I die of old age before getting rid of my latest round of writer's block!
Gary C. King Since I write primarily true crime, an interesting case--especially a serial killer case--is sufficient to inspire me. I figure if I find it interesting, it's likely that many readers will too. The research portion makes or breaks inspiration for me. Often reading a good book, any genre, is a source of inspiration inviting that little old thing called creativity to show itself.
Gary C. King Not very well! I've been battling it for the past couple of years! I think it's time to write something new to get past writer's block. Again.
Gary C. King Murder Most Foul is a compilation of some of my older stories from my days writing detective stories for the various crime magazines.
