Phoenix C. Brown Back to Basics came to me from a few different angles. I was listening to a song by Leela James called "Fall for you" and scenes started flowing through my head. I wrote them down and left them alone. Then I overheard a conversation on how to deal with some issues at work and the person said, "We just need to get back to the basics."
That stuck with me and Kenya's character was born. I took back to basics and wanted to use it in a few different ways in relation to her story as well as Kevin's.
Phoenix C. Brown It doesn't take much to inspire me. Sometimes it's a phrase I hear or a song that triggers a character in my head. Other times I might see a picture or a painting. I jot down what thoughts pop in my head and if the character continues to talk... I continue to write.
Phoenix C. Brown I just finished Back to Basics. It will be released via amazon.com in paperback form on April 30th. Back to Basics is a love story.

Kenya has always been the dependable go to friend and daughter. When a family secret is revealed she realizes that she can’t trust anybody. Not even her own mother. Rocked by the revelations Kenya embarks on a journey of discovering who she is when she’s not the support system of everyone else.

Kevin is tired of the fast life. He’s ready to settle down and find a wife. The remnants of his last relationship have left him jaded. Between trying to follow his dreams and run from the past he’s had little time to focus on what he truly wants…love.

When the paths of Kenya and Kevin cross it’s almost like fate stepped in and guided them to each other. But where there is fate, there must be faith because the devil is not far behind. Will they be able to navigate the storms or will they let the tsunami of life destroy what they want to build.
Phoenix C. Brown Don't give up! There will be times when you are ready to throw in the towel but don't do it. If you write for the passion and not for the paycheck you will always have new stories to tell. Of course we all want to be paid for our work, that's natural but don't let the politics make you run away. Stay focused and live your dream!
Phoenix C. Brown The best thing about being a writer is being able to share my characters with my readers. I love getting messages from my readers as they are reading the story. It shows me that they are invested.
Phoenix C. Brown Typically when I have writer's block I go back and re-read what I've already written. If nothing comes to me I don't force it. I will just sit the book to the side until my characters start talking to me again.
