April Daniels My sincere condolences and I am sending my most supportive and loving thoughts and wishes. I'm so sorry for what you have endured--as a child and an adult. Please take care of yourself. I hope you have a good therapist. A good, professional therapist really helped me.
April Daniels The title of the 2nd edition (1993), Paperdolls: A True Story of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Mormon Neighborhoods.
April Daniels I guess it was a plot for Paperdolls. Unraveling and healing from the "mystery," denial, and trauma of my childhood sexual abuse.
April Daniels Well, I assume that question is for those trying to create a piece for publication or for a deadline. I haven't experienced that. I do a thing called "Morning Pages" and I simply write down anything and everything that comes to my mind first thing in the morning. Sort of like a "brain dump." I just write. Frequently it's non-sense. Then, after I get all the non-sense out, I start writing about things that matter. I reflect. I understand.
April Daniels I don't consider myself a writer. In the professional sense. I write EVERY DAY, sometimes several times a day, for myself. For clarity. For understanding.

And, that is the best thing about being a writer for me.

I wonder if painters, musicians and other artists have the same feeling? If so, then I guess I'm a writer. But, the intent has never been to write a best seller. I've written for myself, my therapy, and my growth. Selfish, I guess, but it's my way of finding clarity and peace in my life.
April Daniels If you are a survivor, and writing to help provide hope to other sexual assault survivors--TELL YOUR STORY!

I have a dream that if enough of us "blow our trumpets" the walls of denial will crumble like the walls of Jericho did in the bible.
April Daniels Well, it snowed in Utah and I'm going to shovel the walks. Play with the dogs in the snow (they think the whole word threw them a party), and clean the kitchen.

I'm working on continuing my growth and living each day with authenticity and love.

In short, I'm not a writer, in the professional sense. I wrote Paperdolls & Cowboy Boots because after my family session in the early 90s, my therapist told me that all my writings, poems, etc show the healing process from A-Z. She asked me to compile them, then she would write sections to explain what was happening. I did.

The story of how the book continued to be developed, and how I ended up approaching Carol Scott, is included in Paperdolls & Cowboy Boots.

April Daniels I have always written. Now, I realize it's for my own therapy. I write things down on paper (not a computer, for me it has to be pen on paper). Frequently once it's down, I have more of an objective eye. I can see the issue or the problem with more clarity. Sometimes, the answers come to me instantly.

Other times, I simply put it down. At least it's not rattling around in my mind--interring with my day. When I got back to it, I can add more questions, or add more thoughts and insights.

And, as my journaling and writing indicates in Paperdolls, sometimes I simply have to take my writing in to a professional therapist to help me sort it out.
April Daniels My co-author presented in the public arena much more than I did. She told me that every time she did people would ask, "How's April?" Then, there were several profound events that related to the abuse of my childhood, and my healing. I knew I had to provide an update. We both knew. We debated about another book. Eventually we decided to add the events of the subsequent years to the end of the book. We joked that it would be like the "Old and New Testament."

Please take no offense, the bible is beautiful. We are using that description to provide an easy to understand analogy of how the re-release developed.
