I'm reading Lost Illusions,Balzac's wonderful novel about the toughness of literary life in Paris. Also - a book too heavy to read in bed - The Collected Stories of Mavis Gallant, witty and perceptive stories about expat life in 20th century France and Spain. I don't usually enjoy short stories because the characters disappear as soon as you get interested in them, but Gallant's stories are long and richly imagined. I'm also reading Apollinaire's beautiful poems in an old Penguin parallel text edition - trying to improve my French after a recent trip to Paris reminded me how pathetic it is.

I've always wondered about my father's real father, Jack Solomon, who kept a store in Kimberley in South Africa. A cousin once told me that he was found as a three-year-old child wandering around the New York docks and was adopted by a rich New York Family. His wife, the beautiful Florence, left him with two small daughters and went to England with a successful stockbroker called Aubrey Hyman in 1910. My father, Alan Hyman,born at the time of the divorce, was adopted by Aubrey but didn't know he was adopted until years later. When he was growing up his mother had photos of two pretty little girls on her dressing table and when my father asked who they were she used to say, 'They're my nieces in South Africa.' He only met his real father once, as an adult, and they had nothing to say to each other. All I have to show Jack Solomon existed is a faded sepia photograph of a benign looking man with a pipe. This story intrigues me: secrets, lies, adoption - always fertile territory.
