Miranda Miller I'm reading Lost Illusions,Balzac's wonderful novel about the toughness of literary life in Paris. Also - a book too heavy to read in bed - The Collec…moreI'm reading Lost Illusions,Balzac's wonderful novel about the toughness of literary life in Paris. Also - a book too heavy to read in bed - The Collected Stories of Mavis Gallant, witty and perceptive stories about expat life in 20th century France and Spain. I don't usually enjoy short stories because the characters disappear as soon as you get interested in them, but Gallant's stories are long and richly imagined. I'm also reading Apollinaire's beautiful poems in an old Penguin parallel text edition - trying to improve my French after a recent trip to Paris reminded me how pathetic it is.(less)
