Hi, Jackson! I didn't start writing until I was older (almost 30!), so I can't say a teacher inspired me. I did grow up playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and reading lots of science fiction and fantasy, though. I've always enjoyed making characters and worlds. The ABOVE WORLD trilogy was me just letting myself have fun with things that I love: mythology, science fiction, and martial arts. And of course I love writing about found families and amazing friends, and people recognizing their own strengths. I love all of those characters so much, and I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the books, too! It was a dream of mine to write something that would inspire people the way books inspired me when I was in middle school and high school. Thank you so much for writing to me. Wishing you blue skies and calm seas, Jenn Reese

Hi, Rosa.
Wow, that story title is a blast from the past! Checking my notes, I see that I sold "I Dreamed of Sky" to a small press magazine called "Pulp Eternity" in 1998, for their "I Am Dragon" issue. It was one of the first story sales I made after becoming a writer. I'm not even sure if I have a copy of that story anymore!
Thanks so much for the question and the trip down memory lane.
Best,
Jenn

Hi Liahona! I read a lot of Newbery Award books when I was growing up, like The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (still one of my favorites) and The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I loved anything with fantasy in it -- especially dragons and unicorns. I enjoyed The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and the other Narnia books by C.S. Lewis and desperately hoped to find a portal to another world in my own house. (Alas, I did not.) After that, I started reading adult fantasy and science fiction, because there wasn't much YA when I was growing up. (But that's okay -- I get to read it now!)
Thanks so much for the question!
