I think any writer has many sources of inspiration. For me, it comes from people around me, places I've been or ideas I've read or thought about. But most of all, it comes from the characters themselves. I practised law for many years in Toronto and spent hours upon hours listening to clients and their problems. After years of this, I suddenly started to write [The Osgoode Trilogy in which a Toronto lawyer, Harry Jenkins, is the protagonist. Those years of stories inspired me to create that trilogy. I have always had a great interest in almost all the arts. That love was the inspiration for The Trilogy of Remembrance in which Alexander Wainwright, Britain's finest landscape artist, is the protagonist.

Write and don't stop. Don't let anyone or anything discourage you. As one of my favourte authors, Robertson Davies, said,"No one ever erected a statue in honour of a critic."

I have just completed my sixth novel which is the third in the second trilogy. It's called Night Crossing, the third in The Trilogy of Remembrance. For me, the easy part is writing, editing and publishing. The hard part is promotion. I think many writers would agree with me especially in this new publishing landscape. And so...I plan to work on promotion for the next year--much of it to be done right here on Goodreads which is an amazing community. After that, I've flirted with the idea of writing several children's books. I have a great title for one:"I Used to Believe in Rainbows," stolen from my daughter. At some point, I might embark on another trilogy with an entirely new set of characters. We'll see who shows up.

The best part of being a writer is the opportunity to think and puzzle over life. I like to give my characters in both trilogies the BIG questions to ponder. For example, in The Drawing Lesson, the first in The Trilogy of Remembrance, Alexander Wainwright, Britain's finest landscape artist and protagonist of the trilogy believes that the universe is filled with mysterious and secret forces. Rinaldo, a conceptual artist, considers this world and our existence in it, just the result of a meaningless dance of molecules.

Both of them would be most grateful if you were to like their pages. They have a contest as to who can gather more "likes".

Night Crossing, the third in The Trilogy of Remembrance grew rather mysteriously out of the first two in the trilogy, The Drawing Lesson and The Fate of Pryde. When I first "met" [the character]Alexander Wainwright, Britain's finest landscape artist and the star of the trilogy, I knew that he would be interesting enough and deep enough to carry me through a trilogy. It may sound strange, but it's really the characters who run the show and give me the ideas. So... I got the ideas from him! But, truth be told, I like to explore a lot of questions which life raises and he seemed just the right sort of character to HUNT for the answers.

If the muse has fled, there's only one thing to do. For me, it's to stop trying so hard to coax him/her/it back. Relax and do something else because whatever words or ideas you force are usually poor and uninspired. Let the muse return with soft words.
