Well, write what you know is the most common advice and I think it is apt. I'd also say don't give up. I've had positive and negative reviews of my books and short stories, but I don’t get too discouraged. Really, a lot of it comes down to taste. Some people won't like your book no matter how good it is. Of course, if you are a terrible writer, you may want to try something else.
The good news is that spelling and grammar are fairly easy to improve with practice. Story development is a bit trickier. It helps to watch TV, movies, read, and see plays. The nice thing about writing is that it doesn't really cost much to pursue financially. You can practice easily and join writing groups to get advice.
I like self-publishing because it gives me complete control of my work. Also, I can get feedback from strangers. But, mostly I just like to write and share my work. Some people won't like it and that's ok. You have to be willing to accept some negative reviews if you are going to put yourself out there!

The Lost Elf, my most recent project, was mostly inspired by World of Warcraft and The Lord of the Rings. I especially like J.R.R. Token's universe. You might find some influence from other books and video games as well. In fact, my series in some ways reads like a video game. Something I've grown to love about The Lost Elf, but I also want to make sure it doesn't go too far in that direction.

Currently I'm working on The Lost Elf, a short story series. It's a medieval fantasy story about an elf who has amnesia. I've always wanted to write something in that genre, but I never liked what I've written previously. This time I'm actually committed to it! Fantasy is a tricky genre for me, I think, and I like the challenge.

I love being the mastermind of my own world! Writing allows me to create every aspect of a story. Including characters, plot, setting, and other things. I guess it's about control. I don't have anyone telling me what to write. Sure, I can listen to suggestions and sometimes I use them. But, I like having the final say!

I force myself to write as every day if I hit writer's block. Even if it's just a sentence, I think it helps. I also don't care if it's poor writing at the time, since I will go back and fix it later. Usually I end up finding my stride this way.
What's more difficult is motivating myself when I haven't been writing for a while!
