Several friends and I were sitting around eating summer sausage and pepper jack cheese one evening and happened to be talking about the several large scale police searches for dastardly criminals lately. We started spouting ideas, (brain storming) about what kind of event would trigger the next big police search somewhere. It started my mind working and over the next few months I had mentally outlined the story. Now the easy stuff comes.

I have always been very active and since retiring from an active employed life I find I need to fill the time with something. I can think of no better way to fill my time than writing. Its an activity that exercises my brain. Now, I just have to find an activity as interesting as writing that exercises my muscles.

Finish what you start. I talk to so many people who say they have written something, but cant finish it for what ever the reason. Sometimes they can't find a good ending. Other times they can't quit revising. Like the Boeing engineer once told me, sooner or later you have to stop engineering and build the damn plane. Sooner or later, you have to quit revising and finish the book.

Foe me, the best thing about being a writer is that I read so many things done by others. I read a couple of books a week. I often read genres that I do not write in just to see what others are doing and see what techniques they use to describe something, or present a scene.

When I experience a little writers block on a project, I simply put it down for a while. I may do something entirely different such as go out on an afternoon photo expedition in the woods. Sometimes I work on something else for a while. Writing a short story about an entirely different subject often works to get me back on track with the original project.
