Maria Thermann Never had it and never likely to get it either. I could write a novel about two dustbins in a street, if I had to! But if I get stuck on a difficult part in a story, I either go out for a walk to refresh the "little grey cells" or break out in a baking frenzy. Muffins are sooooo good for improving one's imagination!
Maria Thermann I've been working as a professional fiction and non-fiction writer for about 5 years now and the best thing is that I can work when I like and turn clients away, if they're not nice. Writing is a never-ending adventure, who wouldn't want to have that amazing skill?
Maria Thermann Never be put off by critics (they're just jealous!) and write, write, write, as well as read, read, read critically - don't think your words are precious, review and discard as necessary. Read the best authors from as many different genres as possible and pick up writer's tools along the way. Make notes how some of your favourite authors tackled difficult scenes, taboos or subjects. Learn from them - and avoid writing groups like the plague!
Maria Thermann Flippety Floppet book series for Early Learners
The House Detective, for readers aged 8-12
and a full-length murder mystery novel in German for adult readers, following in the footsteps of my "Inspektor Beagle" short story collection
Maria Thermann An interesting article in the news, an overheard conversation on a bus or train or something out of the ordinary that happens to people I know might trigger of a brainstorming attack that leads to a book or short story idea. For most writers it's a combination of many different factors and some considerable "gestation" time that produces a fully-fledged plot in the end.
Maria Thermann The Flippety Floppet, aimed at Early Readers aged 5-7, is what I'm currently working on with a brilliant young illustrator called Sarah Hammond. One day I thought how difficult it would be for a little alien arriving on Earth to understand complex human relationships - let's face it, humans don't really understand them either! So I started with that and somehow the story about a young blue creature from a blueberry blue planet called Azura wrote itself...to be published soon!
