Bill Cokas It's fictional and yet it's not. I would travel to the New Iberia, Louisiana depicted in James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series. He writes about the place so vividly and with such romantic imagery that it comes off as this side of paradise. Which is why it's so disturbing how often it's disrupted with crime, corruption and violence.
Bill Cokas I've always known I was adopted, and I'd never thought twice about my "real" mother. However, she never stopped thinking about me, and around my 40th birthday, she located me through the adoption agency (amazingly, still in business). Lines of communication were opened, and a satisfying relationship was forged. The whole ordeal planted the seed for "Battle Axe," which is in no way autobiographical. I tried to imagine what it would have been like if I HADN'T known I was adopted...and what if the person who eventually found me maybe WASN'T my true birth mother after all, but knew everything about her. You can see how this could get twisted pretty quickly. It was immensely fun to write, as I hope it is to read, and I doubt I would have ever come up with it if I hadn't been recently "found" myself.
