Terry Baker Mulligan In 2000, my husband and I were walking past Hamilton Grange, the Harlem home of Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. My husband commented that it would be awesome to see Bill Clinton and Hamilton talking on the front steps of the Grange, because they'd have a lot to talk about.

I discovered that people in STL had a monolithic and negative view of Harlem, where I grew up. I vowed to write a book to set the record straight.

Terry Baker Mulligan When I'm stuck, I give the problem some space. Often, an idea on how to proceed will come to me in a day, a week or a month later. If not, I go back in and try something new. Sometimes I can "write forward," then return to the issues, weeks or months later.

Occasionally I learned that a section or chapter wasn't going anywhere because I was forcing the issue, or was too in love with my own writing and that part just needed to be eliminated.
