I grew up in the Sugar Hill section of Harlem and write about the community and its history. In May of this year, my memoir, “Sugar Hill Where the Sun Rose Over Harlem,” won two, first place 2013 Benjamin Franklin awards in the categories of Autobiography/Memoir and Multicultural writing. In 2012, “Sugar HIll” won a first place Independent Publisher award for Multicultural Adult Nonfiction.

I’ve just completed my second book, a novel set in Harlem in which Bill Clinton meets the ghost of Alexander Hamilton. I got the idea because as a kid, the house I lived in was across the street from Hamilton’s historic home, the Grange.

Something that people may not know about me: While in Europe, I hitchhiked approximately 1000 miles.

Sometimes I can "write forward," then return to the issues, weeks or months later.

Occasionally I learned that a section or chapter wasn't going anywhere because I was forcing the issue, or was too in love with my own writing and that part just needed to be eliminated.(less)
