Write every day - even just a couple of lines which you realise you will probably come back and change the next day or next week. If you get something down on paper (or on disk) you will work through any block you have.

First, read, read and read. Always be reading books. It's really important to get a good feel for the tone, styles, language, tempo, etc. of other books in the genre in which you write.
Second, editing other people's manuscripts is very useful - both basic content editing to build an awareness of where you might be making common mistakes yourself, and plot / character editing to get a good feel for how to spot a weakly written plot and how to flesh it out and improve it in your own writing.

I have always daydreamed about unusual scenarios, characters and situations. Quite often I would write a few pages to get these imaginings down on paper.
Reading other books - lots of them - is what actually inspired me to write a full story myself.

For Mark Star Alien Induction, the idea kind of evolved. I started writing a basic story more as an exercise and was interested in exploring a boy's reaction to seeing a UFO forming a crop circle. When I got to writing what happened next the idea of the UFO landing specifically to find Mark Star seemed interesting and from there the rest of the story followed.
