First, read, read and read. Always be reading books. It's really important to get a good feel for the tone, styles, language, tempo, etc. of other books in the genre in which you write.
Second, editing other people's manuscripts is very useful - both basic content editing to build an awareness of where you might be making common mistakes yourself, and plot / character editing to get a good feel for how to spot a weakly written plot and how to flesh it out and improve it in your own writing.

I have always daydreamed about unusual scenarios, characters and situations. Quite often I would write a few pages to get these imaginings down on paper.

For Mark Star Alien Induction, the idea kind of evolved. I started writing a basic story more as an exercise and was interested in exploring a boy's reaction to seeing a UFO forming a crop circle. When I got to writing what happened next the idea of the UFO landing specifically to find Mark Star seemed interesting and from there the rest of the story followed.
