Stephen Kelly First, read, read and read. Always be reading books. It's really important to get a good feel for the tone, styles, language, tempo, etc. of other boo…moreFirst, read, read and read. Always be reading books. It's really important to get a good feel for the tone, styles, language, tempo, etc. of other books in the genre in which you write.
Second, editing other people's manuscripts is very useful - both basic content editing to build an awareness of where you might be making common mistakes yourself, and plot / character editing to get a good feel for how to spot a weakly written plot and how to flesh it out and improve it in your own writing.(less)
