Brian Duncan I was researching the background for 'The Lion and the Leopard' when I was drawn into reading about the slave trade in the area around Lake Nyasa in the last half of the 1800s. Attention was drawn to it by David Livingstone, and there are several gripping first-hand accounts of the struggles to defeat the slave traders. My novel 'Lake of Slaves' covers the period 1887-1895, and is essentially a true story, woven around fictional characters.
Brian Duncan I'm currently writing the third novel in my trilogy - The Lion and the Leopard - set in the area round Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika during the First World War. The 'Lion' in the title is the badge of the British South Africa Police (BSAP) - a para-military force started in 1890. The 'Leopard' in the title is the badge of the Nyasaland Volunteer Reserve. Both units served with distinction in the War. Many years later I had the privilege of serving in both outfits.
