It's commonly mis-attributed to Twain, but the quote about the two most important days of your life being the day you were born and the day you find out why form, I think, the central mystery of my own life - a mystery that has been solved by Jesus Christ. And I think this fundamental question of life - why were we born? why are we here? what is the point of life? - lies at the heart of everything I write, and always has done. The quote, incidentally, was most likely from a sermon given by Ernest T. Campbell, minister of the Riverside Church in New York City. ("Apocryphal Twain" would make a pretty decent Twitter account, by the way, much like "Accidental Partridge".)

If we’re talking romantic couples, I think it has to be Clare and Henry from The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. If we look outside romance, there are so many great couples - of all different dynamics - in literature! George and Lennie (Of Mice and Men), Andy and Red (Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption), Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect (The Hitch-Hikers' Guide To The Galaxy), Danny and his father (Danny the Champion of the World), Mattie Ross and Rooster Cockburn (True Grit), Richard Neville and Ben Cortman (I Am Legend), Huck and Jim (Huckleberry Finn), Holmes and Watson (Sherlock Holmes), Mr Stevens and Miss Kenton (Remains of the Day), Frodo and Sam (Lord of the Rings), Sophie and the BFG (The BFG), Harry and Hermione (Harry Potter), Pi and Richard Parker (Life of Pi)... you could write a pretty decent book on the subject.
