BENJAMIN JOHNCOCK is an award-winning British novelist, short story writer and journalist. His debut novel, The Last Pilot, was published in the U.S. (Picador) and U.K. (Myriad) in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim. And I think this fundamental question of life - why were we born? why are we here? what is the point of life? - lies at the heart of everything I write, and always has done. The quote, incidentally, was most likely from a sermon given by Ernest T. Campbell, minister of the Riverside Church in New York City. ("Apocryphal Twain" would make a pretty decent Twitter account, by the way, much like "Accidental Partridge".)
