Who was the short, round man sitting alone at the diner across the street from the hospital, watching the snow, the night I was born?

Oh, yes. In my most recent book, Sacrificial Lam, a mystery-suspense novel set on the campus of a small southern college, I used as the setting the campus at which I taught. I also used several of my colleagues as models for some of the characters. No lawsuits yet! :)
Actually, I treated the identifiable people very well. The unsavory characters were fiction. Weren't they?

The best thing about being a writer is writing. That may sound a bit coy, but it's the truth. Sitting down and fleshing out an idea for a story, getting into the zone and making a character come to life, occasionally making yourself laugh or cry. Writing can be hard, painful, but when it works, it's the best.

I have several books I'm looking forward to reading this summer. Here's the short list:
The Almost Moon, by Alice Sebold
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by Lisa See
No One to Trust, by Iris Johansen
The Preacher, by Sander Jakobsen
Reservation Blues, by Sherman Alexi

To find my favorite fictional couple, I go back to the American crime writer Dashiell Hammett and his novel The Thin Man, written in 1934. It was the last novel Hammett wrote, and it became a six-part film series and later a TV series in the 1950s. A sequel was discovered in Hammett's papers in 2011 and was published as The Return of the Thin Man in 2012. Nick and Nora Charles were the ultimate sophisticated New York detective couple.

I'm currently working on the second book in the Lam Corso series. The first book (Sacrificial Lam) will be released in the spring. The second (A Lam to Slaughter) should come out the following year. I'm also doing final edits on a sequel to my first novel (A Late Flooding Thaw), which I hope to finish up by March.

I have a mystery/thriller coming out in the spring, Sacrificial Lam, about a small college English professor. It is somewhat autobiographical in the setting and characters, though not in the plot details. I was a small college English professor at a school similar to the one in the novel.
