DAYDREAMS my friend - DAYDREAMS. My advice is to get good at that skill----yes, skill. When I was young, it caused me no end of problems, but I stuck to it because it is fun.
At first the idea was a small event, worthy of a paragraph, but I played that little video in my head and it gradually grew into a complete story - right there in the old bean.
That works for me, but not for others. We are all unique, so be reluctant to take my advice.

Now you want ancient history, but not a long story.I was lucky to grow up in a small town - lucky to have my own room - lucky to have parents who let me find my own way (within reason) - lucky to have access to a good library - lucky to have found Sherlock Holmes, Nero Wolfe and others.
In my room I had a maple writing table, a good old desk lamp, pencils, paper, a paint set and a small statue of Mr. Toad of Toad Hall.

A new Sherlock Holmes story for MX Anthologies. I have a deadline for this one. I'm waiting for a proof copy of book 3 of my 'Lost and Forgotten series'.
Before I start book 4, I need to go back and read the entire series to refresh my memory. I'm also working on cleaning the basement. (I am not a single man.)

Do not talk about your story to most people!!!!! Be reluctant to simply take any advice. Very important ---- write for yourself, not others. Write what you like to read. Do not give up. For God's sake, do not give up!

If I get rich and famous, those will be the best things. Meanwhile it is very satisfying to see my work in print. Also having written, etc. etc. It's all good.

I have a specific place to go. (a chair in my garage.) Don't know why, but it usually works. Also daydreaming just before I sleep and just after I wake up.
