How do you get inspired to write?

Maurice Barkley Now you want ancient history, but not a long story.I was lucky to grow up in a small town - lucky to have my own room - lucky to have parents who let me find my own way (within reason) - lucky to have access to a good library - lucky to have found Sherlock Holmes, Nero Wolfe and others.
In my room I had a maple writing table, a good old desk lamp, pencils, paper, a paint set and a small statue of Mr. Toad of Toad Hall.
I never created anything worth reproducing, but it was where it all started.
