Robert A. Sullivan I was reading a lot of Kate Wilhelm, Isaac Asimov and Phillip K. Dick. I'm reading Andrei Sakharov's Memoirs right now because someone donated a twenty-nine-year-old first edition hardback copy to the library where I hang out and the library didn't want it so they put it up for grabs. I'm up to the second chapter but it's fascinating stuff; he developed the first Soviet hydrogen bomb. I'm also working on two novels so I can't read as might as I might otherwise indulge myself.
Robert A. Sullivan A man was born; he lived and died. The end.
Robert A. Sullivan I used to think I wanted to live in the world that I've created with my characters--until I had a dream one night about spending the day with Carolyn on the island where they've all run away to, who's the main character in this series of books. She was either on the phone with Brandy the entire day or complaining to me about her and finally I thought, "You are no bargain. I'm not spending eternity with you." So I don't know; Arthur Clarke's 2001 future seems fairly benign.
Robert A. Sullivan My most recent completed book is the fourth book in the series; I simply picked up at the end of the third book (which is a manga, currently hopelessly bogged down in pre-production issues with artists, copyright laws and other issues) and went from there.
Robert A. Sullivan I mostly watch Japanese anime and Akira Kurosawa movies for my plot ideas. Since Hollywood sees fit to shamelessly steal from Kurosawa, I consider myself in good company--honor among thieves and all that.
Robert A. Sullivan I have the first chapter of the fifth Carolyn & Brandy book and I have two chapters done and a third started of another book that started out as a short story. But being in school, homework must come first. I played the 'I'm a writer so my book has to come first' game when I was an undergraduate before and my school work suffered accordingly.
Robert A. Sullivan Keep working whether you get picked up or not, whether you get an agent or not. Multiple titles establishes your credibility as a writer.
Robert A. Sullivan You are your own boss; I don't owe any publisher any book that I've signed a contract for. I love getting started on a new project but it never feels as if it's work for me. Because I believe in starts, the end is inevitable, which is always worth waiting for.
Robert A. Sullivan Writer's block is difficult; I don't force it. It's been my experience that if I wait long enough, my subconscious works through whatever problems my conscious mind has been having and rewards me with something worthwhile.
