Terry Lee That's a difficult question because my mind is always spinning. I now know why I can remember scenes from particular movies, word for word. Until I started writing I used to think this was just a useless quirk I've had for most of my life. Now I understand the words, the timing, the movement of the dialogue, intrigued me. I also love character development and writing dialogue...much better than the narrative part. Think I might have been a screenwriter in a previous life:)
Terry Lee Being able to say I am a writer/author. I have published 3 books. I don't often say this out loud unless I'm asked, but I do repeat this mantra at times before going to sleep. Puts a smile on my face and gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Terry Lee Work on another writing project till it passes. Being self-published, there is always something to update, promote, etc. Beware of social media though...one can easily get sucked into the marketing industry and find more time is spent there than writing...
Terry Lee Just do it. Keep learning.
Give yourself permission to just write. Don't critique while writing...anything goes. Edit/critique later.
Re-read your last couple of paragraphs when you sit down again to get your mind back in the flow.
Immediately write down any and all thoughts, ideas, lines, scenarios you like...don't rely on remembering them later.
Try, try, try not to compare yourself to other writers.
Identify your intent...ie, why are you writing? I was 55 when I started writing. I didn't have the time to go through the channels of trying to land an agent. My intent was to hold a book in my hand with TERRY LEE on the cover. Sure, making NY Times best-sellers list would be great...so would being a pick in Oprah's Book Club. See where I'm going? My first novel was published in 2012, the year I turned 60...
Terry Lee Time Trials came about from being on my high school reunion committee in 2010 and again in 2015. I started looking at people I knew in high school but didn't really "know." I was also intrigued how perceptions of others change over the years...if the motivation is there. By that I mean, if you take the time to get to know someone (remember, everyone has a story) your perception, at least mine, changes from the person I knew 45 yrs. ago. Having said that, I also discovered some prefer to stick with their original perceptions. Interesting fodder for a writer...
Terry Lee I've got several ideas rolling around in my head (big surprise:), however, I've seriously started on a $.99 book, How To Write When You Think You Can't
