I get inspiration for writing by looking and listening to what's going on the our world, and in the lives of individuals.
When I find a subject that I know my readers will be interested in, I soon find myself inspired, and I begin researching and writing.
Another trigger for my inspiration often comes directly from a book titles I make up; that sets my imagination afire.

I am currently working on two totally different types of stories:
One is titled "Del Rio Grande", and is a spinoff from my historical fiction series, 'American Knights'; a former confederate soldier seeks a new life in Texas after loosing his family to confederate criminals.
The other book is titled "HE!", a first person account of the childhoods of a young boy and his younger sister, as they endure terrible treatment by "HIM"...their father.

Three suggestions I have for aspiring writers is:
1. You just need to keep writing no matter what happens;
1a. When you have allowed people to know that you are writing a book, be prepared to experience indifference, doubt, and even jovial rejection by your immediate family and others...even Jesus' experienced so much disbelief and rejection by his own family that he could not work any miracles.
2. Trust in yourself; nobody elses opinion should dissuade you from desire to write.
3. Be patient with yourself...just keep writing.

The best thing about being a writer, to me, is that it allows me to express myself on subjects of interest. Sometimes my imagination simply takes over as I am writing something mundane but with my mind always wanting to reach out; I just take of in another direction...In short it's about 'freedom'.

The first thing I do when experiencing what we call 'writer's block' is to back off. I don't stress about the sudden absence of creativity or simple loss of interest.
Recently I experienced 'writer's reluctance' while writing another book in my American Knights Series. I stopped, waited half a day and started again; no dice, I was temporarily disinterested, so I began to think about writing something totally out of my historical genre.
Sometimes that process of switching gears starts with tossing around in my mind, different titles for potential stories. I settled, this time, on a title I call "HE!".
The subject matter was something I knew a lot about so I started a first person account of young boy and his baby sister as they frequently endure the ravings and beatings of their father, who is himself a sick man and an alcoholic.
So I suggest that when a writer experiences 'writer's block':
1. Keep writing about something.
2. Don't worry about it.
3. Have fun, relax and maybe go for a walk.
4. Then 'get back in the water'...remember that you are a swimmer.

The idea for my 'American Knights' series was an epiphany that came to mind as I was falling asleep one night.
For over three years I had spent untold hours on Ancestry.com, tracing my 'Knight' ancestry. I had found family as far back as my 5th GGrandfather, Miles Knight, circa 1747. Miles Knight came to the American Colonies in 1767 as an indentured servant who could not otherwise pay for his passage from England.
I began the series with Miles Knight as a work of historical fiction; weaving historical facts with fiction from my imagination. I thought that I'd follow the ancestry of Miles Knight down through his descendants, thereby establishing a series of historical novels that was founded on fact and made more interesting via fictional storytelling.
So far I have written and published via CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing:
Book I, "Miles Knight: The Immigrant"
Book II, "Miles Knight: The Patriot"
Book III, "Miles Knight: The Saboteur"
Book IV, "Miles Knight: The Avenger"
