"There is a writer in all of us!

The influences most notable in my life, other than being a born again Christian, begin with my 7th & 8th grade English Teacher, Ms. Donnie Watts. Ms. Donnie took no prisoners when it came to the use of the English Language; we conjugated verbs, we diagrammed sentences, we had spelling bees, we had to read aloud from the classics, and were even graded on our penmanship. I was also schooled by Mrs. Haller in Latin I & II, although as a teenager I had no idea how valuable my early education would be.

When I retired in 2004 I followed the teachings of Ms. Julia Cameron in her book, "The Artist's Way". I learned to simply write down by hand, my thoughts, in a free-flow manner every morning for 12 weeks; on a morn

The idea for my 'American Knights' series was an epiphany that came to mind as I was falling asleep one night.

For over three years I had spent untold hours on Ancestry.com, tracing my 'Knight' ancestry. I had found family as far back as my 5th GGrandfather, Miles Knight, circa 1747. Miles Knight came to the American Colonies in 1767 as an indentured servant who could not otherwise pay for his passage from England.

I began the series with Miles Knight as a work of historical fiction; weaving historical facts with fiction from my imagination. I thought that I'd follow the ancestry of Miles Knight down through his descendants, thereby establishing a series of historical novels that was founded on fact and made more interesting via fictional storytelling.

So far I have written and published via CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing:
Book I, "Miles Knight: The Immigrant"
Book II, "Miles Knight: The Patriot"
Book III, "Miles Knight: The Saboteur"
Book IV, "Miles Knight: The Avenger"

I don't stress about the sudden absence of creativity or simple loss of interest.

Recently I experienced 'writer's reluctance' while writing another book in my American Knights Series. I stopped, waited half a day and started again; no dice, I was temporarily disinterested, so I began to think about writing something totally out of my historical genre.

Sometimes that process of switching gears starts with tossing around in my mind, different titles for potential stories. I settled, this time, on a title I call "HE!".
The subject matter was something I knew a lot about so I started a first person account of young boy and his baby sister as they frequently endure the ravings and beatings of their father, who is himself a sick man and an alcoholic.

So I suggest that when a writer experiences 'writer's block':

1. Keep writing about something.
2. Don't worry about it.
3. Have fun, relax and maybe go for a walk.
4. Then 'get back in the water'...remember that you are a swimmer.(less)
