I don't suffer from Writer's Block for very long. I put myself inside the character and look out of his/her eyes. What do I see? What is happening at this moment? What happens next?
"Oh my gosh! There's a demonic wild boar coming straight at me! What shall I do? What shall I do?" See what I mean? Of course it helps to be mildly insane as well. :)

It is a slower path to starvation than being a poet. I have found that magazine articles are the fastest way to get money incoming. Even then most magazines pay within 60 to 90 days after publication.

I have found that "Practice makes perfect." Write and continue to write, but only write about things that you personally know.
Writers have thin skins. Learn to accept constructive advice.
One last thing. Your momma, your family and your friends will tell you that your story is the best there is. It's perfect. Can't be improved on. Etc. Do not believe them. They are prejudice in your favor and the first time you get a rejection notice it will davistate you. Find another author/editor who will take the time to read your work and give you an honest review.

I am nearing completion of "Round Mountain" the second book of "The Trail of Blood on Ice" trilogy. "The Spencer Rifle" was the first book of the trilogy.

My first written story was submitted to my fourth grade teacher. When she read it to the class it was the only time I've every received twenty-nine rejections.
In later years I found a novel that someone had left on a bench. Within a few pages I saw why it had been abandoned. It was truly awful. Growing disgusted I threw it in the trash saying "I can write better than that." A little voice in my head said. "Why don't you?"

The Spencer Rifle is my first attempt at historical fiction. The background is set in the Cherokee and Creek tribes involvement in the US Civil War. The story is also a bit of my family history. My family built and owned Elkhorn Tavern in Pea Ridge, Arkansas where the Civil War battle took place. While I do not consider the work to be a war book in ordr to tell the story of the people of the time and their lives it does take place in a war setting.
