Egads! I just read this. I found Philip Mansel's work particularly illuminating. Constantinople: City of the World's Desire.

Oh, my apologies!!!!
I just this minute saw this comment, DeeAnn. I'm so sorry I didn't answer earlier. I don't know how I missed it.
Yes, I would be delighted to see what you've found on (military?) women. Hmm... how to contact me. Let's see shall we try a message through FB? I'm the Linda Lafferty with the equestrian pic.

(view spoiler)[I would love to talk to you about "The Bloodletter's Daughter". This was the 2nd book I read by you (in less than a week!) and I loved it, but that part where Don Julius starts going crazy with the ax in this bedchamber and then you find out it's not who it's supposed to be...I'm glad, but it's driving me crazy not knowing exactly who it was and what happened there! Is there any chance you could divulge those details? (hide spoiler)]

Heather! I don't know how I didn't see this question, sorry! Oh, I can't say--major spoiler!
However think about the clues, what happened (pretty extraordinary) BEFORE the incident. And look at the epilogue...

Thank you, Humphry.
Napoleon is fascinating, isn't he? Absolutely unique.
I'm sorry but I can't read anything beyond my stack right now. I'm deep into a book on Caravaggio, drowning in research and rough drafts.
I do wish you the best with your book.

Take criticism objectively which means guard your heart. It may or may not be appropriate. Don't let criticism and rejection crush your delicate tendrils as you grow as a writer but stand close enough to the criticism to see if it really applies to you.
Guard your heart.

I can be a really messy housekeeper and get away with it. Hey! I'm writing.

In my case, I read more history, research, review my manuscript, and then go cross country skiing or biking to work it out.

I'm working on a book set during the Napoleonic Wars in Russia (think the time frame/setting of War and Peace).

I'm often inspired by reading history or reading about psychology and science.

I learned about Virginia Tacci, the girl who rode the Palio race (bareback) in 1581, while I was living for a month in Siena, Italy. I believe I may have read about it in a guide book although I can't quite remember. I knew I had a novel as soon as I read about her.
