I wanted to summarize my observations on bee behavior both in the field (wild nature) or in the laboratory (like an indoor bee foraging arena). I especially wanted to introduce my readers to the alien world of bee senses. Bees can see hidden ultraviolet patters on flower petals or the variations in polarized light across the sky. I share the latest findings that bees are sentient (can feel pain), can problem solve and use tools. We need to take a kinder approach to bees and other insects especially with regard to using insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. Let's give bees a chance!

Sitting in nature is the best way. I find a quiet place, like on a boulder in a desert canyon, or alongside a stream and let the thoughts come. I often write down ideas on slips of paper, or better yet, on my trusty Mac laptop if I have it with me. I'm inspired by the sights and sounds of nature, the calls of birds and the buzzing of bees on flowers. I will also save the moment by taking photographs on my DSLR or cell phone camera.

A few months ago I finished my latest (11th) book called "What a Bee Knows." I'm gathering material for a new children's book.

Read, read, read all different genres if possible. And start writing. Beginning is often the hardest part. I write non-fiction so am most at ease with non-fiction science topics about insects and flowers.

Getting to tell your story. Sharing your ideas with a public, readers that you've never met, in your neighborhood or around the world!

Usually not a problem. Once I start writing (which can take a few days....) the words flow. I find that it is so much easier to edit after just getting some ideas down on e-paper. That can be the stumbling block, making a start.
