David Freed Hi Kathy:

Thsnkz so much for the kind words. Glad you've enjoyed the series. I, too, hope Ray narrates The Kill Circle. Please send him a note and encourage him to do so.

Somebody once said life is easy, comedy is hard. I couldn't agree more. I'd like to think I'm a pretty funny guy, but that doesn't necessarily translate with ease when writing. Melding mystery, action, character development and yucks that don't fall flat is no easy task. It's why you don't see too many authors out there making the attempt. I'll keep trying, though. Maybe one of these days, I'll get it right.

Blue skies,

David
David Freed Hi Bruce:

I spent three weeks in Hanoi doing research for The Three-Nine Line as well as an article I wrote for Smithsonian's Air & Space magazine. You'll find a link to the article below. I genuinely enjoyed Vietnam. Extremely friendly people, great food, beautiful scenery and fascinating history. It was especially interesting seeing how war is interpreted from the other side of the fence. The North Vietnamese consider themselves victors, and rightfully so, but there's no animosity toward Americans that I could discern. The fact that it's a very young country--more than half of the Vietnamese alive today were not yet born when the war ended in 1973--may have something to do with it.

Best,

David

David Freed Inveterate readers of mysteries have seen it all. Every twist. Every turn. It's my responsibility as a writer to come up with plausible plot developments that keep them off-guard and guessing such that they say to themselves, "Wow. Never saw that one coming..." That's part of the joy of reading mysteries. It's also my responsibility to convey, at a minimum, a patina of authenticity in the fictional worlds I spin, and to try and emulate real life. Unfortunately in real life, bad things sometimes happen to good people. Hope this helps.
David Freed Hi Bruce: Thanks for reaching out, and for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed Flat Spin. You asked about what I enjoy reading. Truthfully, I tend not to read much mystery fiction these days, if only because I fear that I might subconsciously impart the style or words of other writers on my own work. I'm also pursuing a master's degree at present and am swamped with course-required texts. That said, I did read an absolutely terrific historical novel not long ago that could qualify as a mystery, PHILIP NOLAN, THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, by former Navy SEAL Chuck Pfarrer. Chuck's a long-time buddy so I'm biased, but he's a truly fine writer and Nolan is first-rate. It comes out in April. Looking forward to your impressions of the other offerings in my Logan series. Thanks again! Best regards, David
David Freed Thanks for asking, Mike. The fifth book in the series, HOT START, lands in August.
