I've used a dreaded mother-in-law's visit, the birth of a godchild, marching in a parade, nearly drowning on a rafting trip, flying into a fog bank, the tedium of a day job, a casual conversation with a jewelry store sales clerk. So many events, large and small, stimulate an idea for a story or character.
