I've used a dreaded mother-in-law's visit, the birth of a godchild, marching in a parade, nearly drowning on a rafting trip, flying into a fog bank, the tedium of a day job, a casual conversation with a jewelry store sales clerk. So many events, large and small, stimulate an idea for a story or character.(less)

Just This Once by Lena Hendrix
"DNF at 37%. The characters had no chemistry whatsoever. I don’t know how a meaningful relationship was ever meant to develop between the MMC and FMC because the only thing they could think about in both of their POVs was sex. Like that’s the only thi" Read more of this review »

Having a MMC named Whip should have been warning enough. Nevertheless, I read the book, pausing occasionally to think of throwing it against a wall as the author revisited, for the 50th time (and I might be underestimating here), the characters' inse ...more
Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord by Celeste Connally
"Rough

This one was rough. If you want to read a 2023 woman plopped into regency times, lots of long, random inner monologues, and an extremely obvious mystery that moves suuuuuper slow, this one is for you. Covered every “hot button” topic check, chec" Read more of this review »

DNF by page 9. This beginning was even more boring than the Biblical begats.

Not much to the story. I liked the characters.

I was angry with FMC. Even after reading in her doggy care book that human food is bad for dogs, she kept feeding it to the dog.

“Fate is like a strange, unpopular restaurant filled with odd little waiters who bring you things you never asked for and don't always like.”

Michael Connelly
“Livingstone had said sympathy was no substitute for action. That was an essential brick in Bosch’s wall. He had built himself as a man of action and, at the moment when the integrity of his life’s work had been called into question by a man on death row, he had chosen to turn his sympathy for Elizabeth Clayton into action.”
