Alex Hunter The inspiration for Testing of Archie Rathbone was definitely one of those 'what would happen if...' moments. As an adolescent I read all of Douglas Adams' books, and also a smattering of fantasy and Sci-Fi literature, and although I don't think my writing really falls into any convenient genre category, I'm sure these all influenced Archie's little adventure.
Alex Hunter Most of my ideas for stories seem to start with one of those 'What would happen if...' moments. Occasionally though, out of the blue the title of a book comes to me, and then I find myself inventing a story to go with it. I have nothing but admiration for those who work out all their plot structure before they start writing - I haven't been able to do that. Instead, I begin with a clear idea of one particular aspect of the story (the beginning, ending, or a significant event) and perhaps one key character, and then allow the characters to lead me through the plot. They seem to have a better idea of what's going to happen than I do!
Alex Hunter I'm currently working on The Watchmaker's Chain. I started to write it about three years ago but that was interrupted when I went back to finish The Testing of Archie Rathbone. I suppose I must be about three quarters of the way through the first draft.
Alex Hunter I suppose it depends on what's caused it. Usually, a few days away from writing will give me the inspiration I need, but if that doesn't work then I take a complete break from writing and read a book or two. That always seems to work.
