I'll answer this one instead with the book I'm currently working on. My editor at Boroughs asked me if I would be interested in doing a historical piece for their Christmas 2016 releases. I'm never one to say no, so I came up with something quickly. That's how I got the idea: necessity. What I came up with is something in between A Christmas Carol and Kinky Boots ... but you'll have to wait until the book release to find out more ;)

I don't believe in inspiration. I love Jack London's famous quote, "You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." Inspiration for me happens as I write. Things just kind of pop into my head in the process of creating a world. Even if I don't feel like it, I sit down and write. Sometimes inspiration comes, sometimes it doesn't, but I don't wait for it. I keep plugging away one letter at a time until it comes.

As of summer 2016, I'm working with the fantastic team at Boroughs Publishing Group on putting together a Victorian-era Christmas story. I'm also working on the third book in the Noble Highlands series (aka the Black Douglas series). And I've got a story on the back-burner which doesn't have a home yet, but we'll see where it goes. I'm working on it in bits and pieces, when I have a moment or two in between manuscripts.

Don't aspire. Write. If you write, you're a writer. In today's online, hyper connected world, you'll find an audience for your work somewhere, but you will only ever access that audience by completing your work. So write.

For me, the best thing about being a writer is seeing my world come to life on the page. In my head I've got ideas about how the story should go, but when I start writing, start editing, and start bringing those fuzzy concepts into focus, I'm surprised by the depth of the story that just seems to come out of nowhere. It always feels like the story was never mine in the first place. Instead it was something that I helped to create, but which was a living, breathing thing all on its own. It's very true (and in more ways than one) when authors say their books are like their children. We don't control them, we just help bring them into the world and shape them as best as we can.

I'll let you know when I encounter it. I haven't yet (very, very thankfully!). Since I was a child I've been entertaining myself with stories in my head, so I've got a lot of material to draw from at the moment. My greatest hope is that I am fortunate to write so many stories that I exhaust my supply of creativity. I imagine if I ever get there that writer's block will kick in at that point.
