Alexes Razevich Thanks, Lucinda. I'm sure you know there are two more books in Khe's story--Ashes and Rain and By the Shining Sea, as well as a companion book. I've just this month published The Girl with Stars in her Hair. It's fantasy/magical realism set in a 1920s California beach town--so no new mating rituals ;) but some new creatures.

Alexes Razevich Hi Lucinda. Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for your kind words and great question. Honestly, Khe just popped into my head one day, fully formed and with all of her story clear in my mind up to the point where she leaves Lunge commune. The rest of the tale I made up as I went along. I tried to be true to what I knew about Khe and all the doumanas and to design a world and a story that seemed possible and plausable for them. It's always about the characters for me. I become so engrossed in wondering what happens to them that I have to write the books to find out.
Alexes Razevich Write and read, and write and read some more. Find a trusted group of mean critique partners and listen to what the have to say--especially the parts you don't want to hear. But no matter what anyone says, write your own book, the one you want to tell it--the one only you can tell in your true voice. Don't be in a hurry to publish. Let it simmer. Never publish anything that hasn't been professionally edited.
Alexes Razevich So many, many things, not the least of which is a very short commute and getting to work in my jammies. One wonderful thing thing is getting to write stories and then share them with you, the reader. When you like them--that's the very, very best thing of all.
Alexes Razevich I haven't had full-blown writer's block in a long while. I do get stumbling blocks, places where I've painted the characters into a corner and have to figure out how to free them. I usually have a crochet project on hand for these times. I sit back, work on a hat or scarf, and let my subconscious solve the problem. Other times I read. Going for a walk or taking a shower are also good for problem-solving.
