There's an infestation. It's ants. (There's nothing scarier in the world than a swarm of ants)

Maybe it's because I just inhaled the Caraval trilogy, but I'd love to live in one of Legend's magical games.

I had several books on my To-Read list for the summer and got through most of them. Light From Other Stars by Erika Swiller was such a wonderfully written, beautiful story that spans two timelines. I devoured the Caraval trilogy by Stephanie Gerber like it was the world's best ice cream. And, I'm getting started on Robert Powers's The Overstory (my hubby and I are sharing a copy and had to wait for him). I'm just a little bit into it, but I can already tell this is going to be a book to change my life.

The story for Pardon Falls came to me during a 10-hour drive. I thought Phoenix was done, but the characters told me otherwise. Driving is therapeutic for me (I am a Texan after all) so many of my stories are "written" behind the wheel. Ideas also hit me when I least expect it - hearing a news story or even waking up. And, when they hit it's like being hit with a literary tsunami. The whole thing hits at once. It's exhilarating and frightening at the same time.

It's really pretty easy for me. It's like breathing. You can hold your breath for so long before your lungs burn. I can't go too long without writing before my brain starts burning.

I'm *this close* to finishing up the sequel to Phoenix, Pardon Falls. And, then I have a couple of single-titles that having been bouncing around in my head.

Write. Read. Go to critique groups. Grow a thick skin. Oh and have a good wine stock handy.

When someone stops by at a book signing to tell other readers to buy your book. There's nothing like that unsolicited endorsement.

I have a couple of ways of dealing with writer's block. Ok, well, three since sometimes if the Muse ain't talking, then maybe that means I should go dig in the garden. But, when I am making myself write, I either take my dog for a walk so I can get out of my head, or I switch medium. I pull out my journal, break the fourth wall and ask the characters what needs to happen. It's amazing what I've uncovered doing this - including switching a chapter to another character's POV to make it so much stronger.
