A favorite couple, Guido Brunetti and his wife Paola in the Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery series by Donna Leon, set in Venice. Over time they have grown and changed, remain devoted to one another, allowing room for each of their careers, two children who grow up before your eyes. Brunetti himself is an admirable, kind, intelligent man. A great mystery series, beautifully written, with characters you care about, especially Guido and Paola. Food plays a big part and I would love to sit down to a meal with them.

ONE of the best things about being a writer is the right to name my characters. I think names are important to the story and often dictate how seriously I take them. In an age of giving children what I call a 'no name,' I draw from old fashion names that have substance.

My version of writer's block is making one more phone call, or deciding to do a load of wash, working in the garden...all keeping me from sitting down with my computer and getting to work.
