Usually it is something I have encountered personally (life event, music, art, photography) even if it is something that happened to someone else. From that jumping off point my imagination takes over and I think of all the ways that story could pan out.

To write Write WRITE as much as possible. You will find that the more you write the more you will want to write and hopefully learn about the process and begin to craft better and better stories.

Actually this is going to sound kinda weird. I had begun thinking of this character who stole an airplane but wasn't sure how to fly. Why I was thinking about this I have no idea. I was not writing at the time, but I saw it as a screenplay rolling around in my head. Well that went on for a few months. Then one night in the late summer, I was standing in the chest deep water of my swimming pool listening to the lyrics of the song that was playing and the characters started to really come to life. Their story started that night several years ago, well before I met my publisher or ever dreamed I'd be writing fiction constantly.

I am currently doing final edits on the first in a series. The series is called Lost and Found, and it is about loving in difficult situations. One premise involved is that faith promises possibilities but not ease in resolution.
The first book in the series is called THE DIAMOND ROAD and is expected to release December 2015

So far it's the adventure of it all. My characters take me on a ride through emotions, humor and faith. Sometimes they scare me and make me think about all the evil men do. They all change me as I create them and I like that too.

I had little experience with this until July when we lost two pets, and I had a series of emotionally charged disagreements with a very close friend. I didn't want to do anything, especially anything that caused me to dig into my own emotions. They were raw, I was exhausted and frankly writing hurt. So I asked for some advice from a seasoned author friend. It was what I intuitively already knew. 1) To keep writing something, even if it was just. "I was here today" and nothing more. 2) Re-watch movies that you love or one recommended by a friend. 3) Read something you've been wanting to read, even if you put it down after two chapters because your mind drifts to the writers method in chapter one instead of the story.
Well I did two of the above, and not in order. The next time I forced myself to write, a character became a whole lot funnier and more a part of the storyline than I ever imagined.
Baseline. Write, Read, Live and eventually something will spark. But you gotta relax about it.
