First I have to finish the Goldfinch, which I started at the beginning of this year but hate to admit I've had a devil of a time finishing.
Then I'm excited to read Driving Miss Norma, Fractured by Catherine McKenzie, In the Light of the Garden by Heather Burch, and Haint Blue by Jenny Scott, Kim Johnston, and Jennifer Brady

I recently got the results back from my 23 and Me DNA results. BIG surprises there. Definitely some things hidden in our family line and relatives no one ever talked about that I'd like to know more about.

There's no telling what will inspire a new story, BUT what makes me get out of bed each morning wanting to write? That;s the mystery. The older I get, the more important I realize that rituals and having a set writing time each day are so crucial to creating an environment conducive to writing successfully.

From a past job. I went to interview for a job as a document clerk at a law firm. The hiring manager told me about a lady who had committed suicide with her 6 year old child from the building's roof a year earlier. Then I got the job and people would talk about it. Some said a car was found a couple of blocks away from the building with a suicide note referencing a possible affair. It always stuck that it would make a good mystery.

I don't stress about it. I let it happen, take some time away, and know I have to go back and fix something the story isn't liking up until the point where I got the block. My problem is taking too long to go back and fix things. Years in some cases. It's why I'm not a popular or prolific author. When people frustrate me in real life, I take a deep breath and think, "It's okay. Let's make them a character and have a lot of fun them on the page." It's very therapeutic.

If your heart is calling you to write, do it. Don't put it off.

It's a thriller called Shadyside: A storm. A stranded couple. A ghost town haunted by mannequins. Or is the escaped mental patient moving them around?

This is a great question. Took me some time to think about it. And I bet with even more time I might come up with more than one couple, but if I have to pick just one...Maxim de Winter and the Nameless Heroine that becomes the 2nd Mrs. de Winter in Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. Why? I love what a complicated character he is, and that we never quite know what he's thinking, or if he in fact really loves his new wife at first. It's kind of a mystery why he chooses her. (At least to me.)
Plus, he's tragic in his own way, she's very vulnerable and innocent in her own way. Yet, he's drawn to that purity, which he eventually corrupts by bringing her to Manderley. It's kind of a Cinderella story with an edge really. I like that it's a love story at heart shrouded in mystery and atmosphere, with the two lovers at the core.
