This is a great question. Took me some time to think about it. And I bet with even more time I might come up with more than one couple, but if I have to pick just one...Maxim de Winter and the Nameless Heroine that becomes the 2nd Mrs. de Winter in Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. Why? I love what a complicated character he is, and that we never quite know what he's thinking, or if he in fact really loves his new wife at first. It's kind of a mystery why he chooses her. (At least to me.)
Plus, he's tragic in his own way, she's very vulnerable and innocent in her own way. Yet, he's drawn to that purity, which he eventually corrupts by bringing her to Manderley. It's kind of a Cinderella story with an edge really. I like that it's a love story at heart shrouded in mystery and atmosphere, with the two lovers at the core.
