Sophie and Nathan in Sophie's Choice by William Styron. Later made into a film starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline - perfect casting! Sophie loves Nathan despite it being a very tempestuous relationship - he's jealous and has violent mood swings, brought on by his paranoid schizophrenia. But when he's happy, he's wonderful. Not sure what this says about me and my relationships! But I was drawn by the passion and intensity of the relationship, and that intensity has stayed with me since 1979, when I first read the novel. I have tried to mirror that intensity in some of my novels - e.g Gwrach y Gwyllt (which is only available in Welsh, sorry!)
