Sophie loves Nathan despite it being a very tempestuous relationship - he's jealous and has violent mood swings, brought on by his paranoid schizophrenia. But when he's happy, he's wonderful. Not sure what this says about me and my relationships! But I was drawn by the passion and intensity of the relationship, and that intensity has stayed with me since 1979, when I first read the novel. I have tried to mirror that intensity in some of my novels - e.g Gwrach y Gwyllt (which is only available in Welsh, sorry!)(less)

Bethan and 29 other people liked Shovelmonkey1's review of The Heather Blazing:
The Heather Blazing by Colm Tóibín
"The Heather Blazing takes it's title from a line in a traditional Irish folk song. But within the book there is very little blazing and if anything the fires are dying out. This is a book stuffed with metaphors. Filled up like a pinata, one sharp tap" Read more of this review »

This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell
"221 pages in and I'm calling it quits.

It's just OK, but I'm not enjoying it. O'Farrell employs quite a few literary tricks - writing in the second person, footnotes, articles/photos with captions - and those really rile me up. Also, the jump from nar" Read more of this review »

This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell
"I can't begin to say how much I loathed this book, but I was determined and got to the end of it in an 'I've started so I'll finish' sort of a way. I'm not sure what it is, possibly the disjointedness of it because it keeps switching between characte" Read more of this review »

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn
"Here is a taste of how Winn describes the Salt Path; I'll let it speak for itself:

"Blue - green - blue - green. Or for variation green - blue - green - blue - blue - blue - green - green - blue. It came and went in waves of up and down, up, up, down" Read more of this review »

I thought I was reading a cute, imaginative children's book - for 1 chapter.
I devoured the first part, absolutely loved it and told a friend who also likes magic realism 'You will love this!" How wrong was I. She would hate this.

I didn't hate it at a
