Who are some of your other favorite writers? Who has had the most influence on your work? Thanks.

Carla Sarett Oh, just noticed your question. Dickens, P.G. Wodehouse, Muriel Spark, Waugh, Willa Cather, and Rudyard Kipling spring to mind. The great Yiddish writers. They're probably all influences.

Have you always wanted to be a writer? If not, what lead you to your writing career? If so, has writing always been your hobby/goal in life/passion?

Carla Sarett Not at all.

I wanted to be an actress when I was younger (and trained for that, fairly seriously at American Academy of Dramatic Arts.)

And later on, there were other dreams -- but none of them involved writing short fiction. So my writing journey started when my mother died -- and I tried (unsuccessfully) to keep a journal. What emerged was fiction, and that became a passion. So I'd say that writing found me, not the other way around.

Hi Carla, Been searching far and wide for my first blog to do an interview on. I just released a collection which is doing fairly well and I want to keep the hype going. It's called Alone at Midnight which is a horror / thriller collection drawn heavily on character and emotion in each story. Will you let me know if you can help me? Thanks!!

I can't find "comment" box. I like your "influences": Deborah Eisenberg is a wonderful writer. Isak Dinesen should have a revival. A good order in which to read her is 1st West with the Night by Beryl Markham and then ascend to Out of Africa which has some of the same cast members but is of a higher order, not that West with the Night isn't gripping. I.B. Singer and P.G. Wodehouse also beloved.

Carla Sarett Wow, Goodreads hid your comment from me. Glad to meet another Isak Dinesen fan -- she is amazing! Definitely due for a revival, I agree. I've been re-reading Singer recently, too.
