Scott King I'm excited to read The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin and its sequel. I'm also going to check out Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker, Michael J. Sullivan's Age of Myth, Raina Telgemeier's Ghosts, M.L. Stedman's The Light Between Oceans, Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad, Jonathan Renshaw's Dawn of Wonder, Thomas Heuvelt's Hex, Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove, Charlie Jane Ander's All The Birds In the Sky, and Claire North's The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August.
Scott King When you hear about how a reader connected with the story. I was at a signing once and a mother and her daughter came up to me. The girl wasn't even ten but she had read my book "Cupcakes vs. Brownies." The girl told me she had gluten allergies, like the protagonist from the book and that the story helped her learn that her parents getting a divorce wasn't her fault. My eyes watered and it was touching to hear that something I wrote made a difference to someone else.
Scott King I write because I can't not write. Ideas get stuck in my head... characters, stories, adventures. They drive me mad and the only way to get them out of my head is to give them a fixed form. Thats why I'm inspired to write. I write to get those things out.
Scott King When I was a freshman in college I wrote a story called "Doug the Obese Dragon." The idea originated from the fact that when you see dragons in video games, movies, or books they always look so cool and I wondered what a fat dragon would be like. The short story was meh but I really liked the character of Doug. So now here I am nearly fourteen years later and I've brought back Doug and thrust him into the middle of a world shattering event. This time the story works MUCH better.
Scott King If you want to be a writer, then write.
Scott King There is no such thing as "writer's block." What most people think of as it is really a lack or preparation. Writing requires a lot of planning and pre-writing. By putting in your time before you start it prevents hitting any blocks when you are in the middle of it.
